sweet & spicy broccolini

Shopping at the local farmers market is a great way to venture outside and pick up some fresh ingredients you don't always see at your local supermarket.

At this week's farmers market, I lucked out and snagged some broccolini from my favorite vendor. (Why are they my favorite vendor, you ask? Because they always have an awesome and inexpensive selection of unique asian greens like chrysanthemum leaves and mizuna... but I digress...)

Though broccolini is great simply roasted with some salt, pepper, and olive oil, I wanted to try something different. I just recently picked up some Coconut Aminos from Whole Foods and thought that this would be a great time to try it out! (Coconut Aminos is a sauce made from coconut sap. It's soy free and gluten free, and tastes somewhat like a mild teriyaki sauce.)

Here we go!

What you'll need:

  • 3/4-1 lb Broccolini (rinsed and shaken dry)

  • 1/4 cup Water

  • 2 large Cloves of Garlic, crushed

  • 1/2 tsp Red Chili Flakes

  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper

  • 2 Tbs Coconut Aminos

  • 1 tsp Ponzu (or tamari + a couple squeezes of lemon juice)

  • 1 tsp Soy Sauce (or tamari)

Place your sauté pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add your broccolini and 1/4 cup of water. Cover and steam for 5 minutes, shaking the pan once or twice throughout.

You will notice the broccolini change color to a deeper green and the leaves will wilt slightly.

Uncover your pan and add in your crushed garlic, black pepper, and chili flakes. Increase heat to medium-high and cook for several minutes, until the water has evaporated and the garlic is cooked. (keep an eye on the garlic and stir the broccolini frequently to ensure the garlic doesn't burn.)

Next, reduce heat to medium and add in the coconut aminos, soy sauce, and ponzu. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds or so.

Once the broccolini is done, sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve!
